Marcovaldo Mosaic on the ceiling of the Baptistery of Saint John, Firenze

This is a detail of the part of the mosaic of the Last Judgement completed by the Florentine artist Coppo di Marcovaldo (1225 - 1276). Dante, the author of the Inferno, a description of the afterlife according to Catholic doctrine, is said to have been deeply affected by these and other disturbing scenes of the tortures of hell depicted on the Baptistery ceiling.
