Font of the Baptistery of Saint John, Firenze

This octagonal font has been located near the south door of the Baptistery since 1658 although it is believed to be far older. The previous fonts were often so large that there was a risk of drowning during baptism. Indeed there is one story of a bowl being broken by the poet Dante in order to rescue a distressed child.
