Lantern of the Baptistry, Firenze The octagonal dome of the Baptistery is far less ambitious than the Brunelleschi dome of the cathedral itself. The gradient of the octagonal sides is far gentler and the interlocking cone which binds them is far less ambitious. The lantern, however, does bear some similarities to the lantern of the cathedral insofar as it is also topped by a ball and cross. However, the lantern of the Baptistry appears short and squat by comparison notwithstanding the Corinthian columns and decorative panelling. © 2007 LACT Limited. All rights reserved.
