The Uccello Clockface

The Uccello clock is located above the main entrance to the cathedral. The clock face features four fresco portraits of Apostles completed by Paolo Uccello in 1443. The clock is based on mediaeval Italian time, still used in Florence until the 18th century, according to which the day begins at sunrise and terminates at sunset. It is only one of a handful of such clocks still in working order. The clock possesses only one functioning hand which turns anti-clockwise as it measures the time remaining until nightfall.
