Giotto's Bell Tower

The campanile of the Santa Maria del Fiore stands before the the Baptistery of Saint John, set apart from the cathedral itself.

This slender elegant tower, whose base occupies an area of less than 14.5 square metres, is admired for its decorative blend of white, pink and green marble encrustrations and its impressive sculptures.

Giotto began the construction of the tower in 1334 but died less than three years later. The project was completed in 1359 in accordance with his original plans.
