Upper part of Giotto's Belltower

The three upper levels of the tower were completed by Francesco Talenti between 1348 and 1359. The top level is taller than the middle level which is in turn taller than the first level. These differences were intended to convey the impression from the ground that all three levels were of the same height. The vertical windows were inspired by the campanile of Siena Cathedral. However, instead of the spire used in Siena, the tower possesses a flat projecting terrace which preserves the uniform rectangular shape of the entire structure.
