Lozenges on Second Level of Giotto's Belltower

Each side of the second level of the tower is decorated with a series of seven lozenges. On the west side the marble figures depict the planets, on the east side the liberal arts, and on the south side the four theological and three cardinal Virtues. The lozenges shown above on the north side of the tower depict the seven sacraments: Baptism, Confession, Matrimony, Holy Order, Confirmation, Eucharist and Extreme Unction. The lozenges were all created in or around 1340 by Maso di Bianco save for Matrimony which is the work of Gino Micheli da Castello.
