Dante explaining the Divine Comedy

 

This picture by Michelino (1417-1491) in the south aisle of the Santa Maria del Fiore shows Dante explaining the meaning of his Divine Comedy, a  mediaeval book which explains the human condition by reference to the afterlife as preached by the Catholic church. The background scenes depict Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.
