The Rose Window of the Western Facade of the Santa Maria del Fiore

The huge rose window of the western facade copies a typical Romanesque feature commonly found above the central portal of numerous mediaeval cathedrals. However, the rose window of the Santa Maria del Fiore was designed in the late 19th century by Emilio de Fabris. Although undoubtedly a splendid sight, the design has been criticised for a slavish lack of originality.
