Madonna of the Goldfinch by Raphael in the Uffizi, Firenze. By continuing through the rooms the visitor can appreciate how the High Renaissance style of the late 15th century developed into the Mannerist style favoured during the 16th century. Whereas the earlier lessons of perspective and the desire to convey a particular human emotion, such as a child's curiosity on discovering a goldfinch, had been learned and were still applied, the poses of the figures became more artificial and stylised. Raphael was at the forefront of this new artistic trend and his Madonna of the Goldfinch (1506) is an extremely important work for this reason. © 2007 LACT Limited.
