Northern European Galleries in the Uffizi, Florence The final rooms of the Uffizi are dedicated to northern European, mainly Dutch, painting of the 17th century. Many of these pictures are unremarkable and so visitors often race through these rooms having spent a large amount of time in the Renaissance galleries. However, there are still several significant works which should not be missed such as, for example, this portrait painted by Rembrandt in 1665 which depicts both the ravages and dignity of age by illuminating the hands and face of an elderly man who is otherwise shrouded in shadows. © 2007 LACT Limited.
