Rome

Rome was once the centre of a huge ancient empire and despite the collapse of its imperial power during the 5th century AD it remained the spiritual capital of Europe as the seat of the Roman Catholic church. As such it attracted numerous sculptors, artists, and architects commissioned to create some of the most impressive buildings of the renaissance and baroque periods.
