Oceanus in the courtyard of the Palazzo Nuovo, Rome

This first century Roman version of a favourite Greek motif is located in the courtyard of the Palazzo Nuovo in Rome. Oceanus was a mythical Sea God who "girdled the world", initially an allegory of salt water seas who later came to represent more specifically the great unknown of the Atlantic Ocean.
