Orestes and Iphigeneia Mosaic in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Rome

This third century Roman mosaic illustrates the story of Orestes and Iphigeneia. The Greek Orestes is seized by the Tauri and taken to the priestess of Artemis for sacrifice. However the priestess is Iphigeneia, his sister. Having recognised each other, both brother and sister escape with the sacred statue of Artemis. The mosaic is composed of stones set into a terracotta base and is exhibited on the first floor of the Palazzo dei Conservatori.
