This is a second century alabaster bust of Septimus Severus, the first African Emperor of Rome. Septimus Severus was a Berber from modern day Libya who caught the eye of the Marcus Aurelius and emerged as Emperor after the power struggle which followed the murder of Commodus, the mentally unstable heir of Marcus Aurelius.
