Basement of the Palazzo Senatorio, Capitoline, Rome

The basement of the Palazzo Senatorio incorporates part of the Tabularium, the ancient Roman archives office constructed in or around 78 BC upon which the senatorial palace was later constructed. The remaining section of the Tabularium consists of a gallery, approximately seventy-four metres long, divided into sections, which was once lit by an open arcade, now partially bricked-up, overlooking the Forum Romana to the rear of the Palazzo Senatorio.

This gallery now forms part of the Capitoline museums complex. It can be reached via the Galleria Lapidaria which links the Palazzo Nuovo and the Palazzo dei Conservatori.
