Capitoline Hill

The Capitoline Hill is the tallest of the seven hills of Rome and is the site of the ancient citadel of Rome. The area was redeveloped under the direction of Michelangelo in the 16th century. He introduced the Cordonata, the ribbed ramp of stone and brick, shown on the right of this picture, whose gradient is gentle enough to allow the passage of horse-drawn vehicles. The considerably steeper flight of stairs to its left leads to the church of Santa Maria in Aracoli and was constructed in 1348.
